Labor Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. As a veteran of the United States Air Force and someone who has spent more than 25 years representing injured individuals and families, I have a deep appreciation for the hardworking men and women who help make our communities strong.

Throughout my legal career, I have represented factory workers, construction workers, truck drivers, nurses, teachers, small business owners, first responders, and countless others throughout Southern Indiana and the Louisville area. What they all have in common is a commitment to providing for their families and contributing to their communities.

Labor Day gives us an opportunity to recognize those efforts and spend time with the people who matter most.

The Value of Hard Work

One of the things I have enjoyed most about practicing law in Southern Indiana is getting to know the people who call this area home.

Whether someone works at a local manufacturing facility, owns a small business, drives a truck, works in healthcare, or commutes across the river to Louisville every day, I have found that the people of Southern Indiana value hard work, responsibility, and family.

Many of my clients come to me during one of the most difficult times in their lives. A serious injury can create uncertainty about medical treatment, missed work, and the future. In those moments, I am reminded how important it is to have someone in your corner who understands what is at stake.

A Holiday Weekend That Brings Families Together

For many families, Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer.

It is a time for:

• Boating and outdoor activities
• High school and college sports
• Last-minute vacations

These traditions create memories that last a lifetime. Unfortunately, I have also seen how quickly a preventable accident can interrupt those plans.

Over the years, I have represented people whose holiday weekends ended with an unexpected trip to the emergency room because another driver was distracted, impaired, or simply not paying attention.

A Few Simple Ways to Stay Safe

After handling accident cases for more than two decades, I can tell you that many serious accidents are preventable.

As you enjoy the holiday weekend, I encourage you to:

• Wear your seat belt.
• Put your phone away while driving.
• Avoid driving if you have been drinking.
• Give yourself extra travel time.
• Watch for motorcycles and pedestrians.
• Be patient in heavy traffic.

The few minutes saved by speeding or taking risks are never worth the consequences of a serious accident.

Remembering What Matters Most

One thing I have learned from representing injury victims is how quickly life can change.

Many of my clients never expected to need a personal injury attorney. They were simply driving home from work, heading to a family gathering, or running errands when someone else's negligence changed everything.

Labor Day is a good reminder to slow down and appreciate the things that matter most—our families, our health, our friends, and our communities.
