Celebrating Independence Day Safely in Southern Indiana
The Fourth of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. Like many Southern Indiana families, my family enjoys spending time with friends, attending local celebrations, grilling out, and watching fireworks. It is a time to appreciate our freedom, our community, and the opportunity to spend time with the people who matter most.
As a veteran of the United States Air Force, Independence Day holds special meaning for me. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country and the freedoms we often take for granted.
Unfortunately, after representing accident victims throughout Southern Indiana for more than 25 years, I also know that the July 4th holiday period is one of the busiest and most dangerous travel weekends of the year. Every year, I meet individuals and families whose holiday celebrations were interrupted by a serious car accident caused by a distracted, impaired, or careless driver.
If you plan to travel this Independence Day, a few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe.
Expect Congested Roads Throughout Southern Indiana
Many residents will be traveling throughout Floyd County, Clark County, Harrison County, and Louisville during the holiday weekend.
Roadways that often experience increased traffic include:
- Interstate 64
- Interstate 65
- Interstate 265
- State Street
- Charlestown Road
- Grant Line Road
- Veterans Parkway
One thing I have learned from handling accident cases over the years is that many collisions occur when drivers become impatient in heavy traffic. Leaving a little earlier and allowing extra travel time can significantly reduce stress and improve safety.
Put the Phone Away
If there is one trend I have seen increase dramatically during my career, it is distracted driving.
Many of the accident victims I represent were doing everything right when another driver looked down at a text message, checked social media, or became distracted by a navigation system.
No message, email, or notification is worth risking someone's life. Before you begin your trip, set your destination, silence unnecessary notifications, and focus on the road.
Watch for Impaired Drivers
Unfortunately, alcohol-related accidents often increase during holiday weekends.
Even if you have not been drinking, remain alert for drivers who may be:
- Speeding
- Drifting between lanes
- Following too closely
- Failing to obey traffic signals
- Driving erratically
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer is to drive defensively. Assume that other drivers may make mistakes and give yourself enough space to react.
Slow Down Around Fireworks Events
Whether you attend fireworks in New Albany, Jeffersonville, Louisville, or another local community, expect heavy traffic afterward.
Many accidents occur in parking lots, at busy intersections, and on roads leading away from large events. Drivers are often tired, distracted, and eager to get home.
A few extra minutes of patience can make a tremendous difference.
Buckle Up Every Time
Seat belts remain one of the most effective safety devices in any vehicle.
No matter how short the trip may be, every occupant should wear a properly adjusted seat belt.
Don't Drive Fatigued
Holiday activities often lead to late nights and early mornings.
Fatigued driving can affect:
- Reaction time
- Judgment
- Concentration
- Awareness
If you are tired, consider delaying your trip or allowing another driver to take the wheel.
What Should You Do After an Accident?
If you are involved in a collision during the holiday weekend:
- Seek medical attention if anyone is injured.
- Contact law enforcement.
- Photograph the vehicles and accident scene.
- Exchange information with the other driver.
- Obtain witness information when possible.
- Notify your insurance company.
- Be cautious when speaking with insurance adjusters.
Prompt action can help protect both your health and your legal rights.
Wishing You a Safe and Happy Fourth of July
As we celebrate Independence Day, I encourage everyone to take a little extra care on the road. The best Fourth of July memories are made when families arrive home safely.
From my family to yours, I wish you a safe, enjoyable, and Happy Independence Day.
