How to Obtain a Car Accident Report from the New Albany Police Department

One of the first questions many people have after a car accident is, "How do I get a copy of the police report?"

Whether you are dealing with vehicle damage, medical treatment, or an insurance claim, the accident report is often one of the most important documents related to your case. Insurance companies frequently request a copy of the report, and it can provide valuable information about the drivers involved, witnesses, vehicle information, and the investigating officer's observations.

If your accident occurred in New Albany and was investigated by the New Albany Police Department, obtaining a copy of the report is usually a straightforward process.

Why Is the Accident Report Important?

After a collision, the police report often serves as one of the first records documenting what occurred.

The report may include:

  • Names and contact information of the parties involved
  • Insurance information
  • Vehicle descriptions
  • Witness information
  • Road and weather conditions
  • Diagrams of the accident scene
  • Statements made at the scene
  • The investigating officer's observations

While the report is not always the final word regarding fault, it can be an important piece of information when evaluating an insurance claim or personal injury case.

How to Obtain a New Albany Accident Report

The New Albany Police Department's Records Division handles requests for accident reports. Reports are generally available approximately three business days after they are submitted. The Records Division is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

You may also be able to obtain your crash report through Indiana's online accident report system. Indiana State Police and many local law enforcement agencies make crash reports available through the BuyCrash website.

When requesting a report, it is helpful to have:

  • The date of the accident
  • The location of the accident
  • Names of the drivers involved
  • The report number, if available

How Long Does It Take for a Report to Become Available?

Most accident reports are not immediately available.

In many cases, the investigating officer must complete and submit the report before it can be released. New Albany reports are generally available within several business days after the accident.

If the accident involved serious injuries or requires additional investigation, the process may take longer.

What If the Information in the Report Is Incorrect?

It is not uncommon for people to discover mistakes in an accident report.

Examples may include:

  • Incorrect vehicle information
  • Misspelled names
  • Incorrect insurance information
  • Errors regarding the location of the accident

If you believe information in the report is inaccurate, contact the investigating agency as soon as possible to discuss the issue.

Do Not Assume the Report Tells the Entire Story

One thing I often explain to clients is that the accident report is only one piece of evidence.

The officer typically arrives after the collision has occurred and may not witness the accident firsthand. In many cases, additional evidence such as photographs, witness statements, surveillance footage, vehicle damage, and medical records may provide important information that is not included in the report.

For that reason, it is important not to assume that an insurance company has the complete picture simply because it has reviewed the police report.

Questions After a New Albany Car Accident?

A police report can be an important starting point after a collision, but it is often only one part of understanding what happened and protecting your rights.
