Bad combination emerges: Distracted driving and 18-wheelers

Indiana State Police say they see it more and more as they patrol our state's interstate highways: distracted driving. And when those distracted drivers are behind the wheels of 80,000-pound tractor-trailers, the risk of truck accidents involving injuries and fatalities is enormous.

Jeffersonville teens, it's National Teen Driver Safety Week

With an abundance of high school and college students in and around Jeffersonville, we well know that teenagers are often not as careful as they should be when they are behind the wheel. Sometimes they are reckless and sometimes they simply are not paying enough attention to signs, weather, traffic and road conditions.Because this week is National Teen Driver Safety Week, parents, teachers, government and organizations are trying to get out the message that teens should slow down and pay attention to driving. The Governors Highway Safety Association says in a disturbing new report that teenaged drivers are 1.6 times more likely to be in motor vehicle crashes resulting in fatalities than adult drivers. 

Young mother struck, killed by 18-wheeler in Indiana

Interstate 65 rolls through Jeffersonville on its way north to the Great Lakes and south to the Gulf of Mexico. As we all know, traffic on the highway is fast and dangerous.A young mother of two was recently driving north of us on I-65 when she heard a noise coming from her SUV. So she pulled over to check it out, careful to park her vehicle on the outer shoulder. Unfortunately, her caution did not prevent an 18-wheeler from striking her as she stood outside, throwing her under her vehicle. The truck accident left the 30-year-old dead along the highway in Rensselaer, Indiana.
